Diogo José Fernandes Homem de Lucena

Diogo José Fernandes Homem de Lucena was born in Lisbon, on 8 March 1949. He is an Electrical Engineer by the Instituto Superior Técnico (1972), with a Master of Science (1976) and a Ph.D. (1978) by the Stanford University.


Throughout his academic career he has collaborated with the Instituto Superior Técnico and the Economics Faculty of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa, in which he is a Cathedrated Professor (retired). He was also a Visiting Professor in the Stanford University.


His main areas of interest were centred, first, in the Uncertainty and Information Economics and in the Telecommunications Economy, and, afterwards, in the matters of the Welfare State Economics, particularly the financing of Health, Education and Social Security.


He was part of the Installing Commission the Economics Faculty of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa, where he was MBA Program Director, President of the Pedagogical, Scientific and Councils and Director. He was a member of the Installing Commission of the Law Faculty of the same University, where he was also the Vice-Dean. He was the President of the Scientific Council of the Social and Human Sciences at the Foundation for Science and Technology. He is a member of the National Education Council.


He was elected Academic Correspondent of the Lisbon Sciences Academy, in 2007.


He was a consultant and participated in the Advisory Councils of several public and private institutions. He participated in the social organs of various companies and foundations, namely as a Member of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation’s Management Board, between January 1999 and January 2014. He is member of the Aljubarrota Foundation’s Directive Council. He is part of the juries for the Pessoa Prize.
