Jorge Moreira Gonçalves

Jorge Moreira Gonçalves is Professor of Pharmacology at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Porto (U.Porto).

 

He graduated in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the Faculty of Pharmacy of the U.Porto, having a PhD in 1991, at the same University, in Pharmacology. As a postdoctoral fellow, he was a fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation at the Institut für Pharmakologie und Toxikologie, Universität Freiburg.

 

His scientific areas of interest are cellular communication, specializing in neurotransmission and the development of communication and signal transcription models using transformed yeasts. His scientific production is published internationally in scientific articles and book chapters, published in the main scientific journals of his area of ​​expertise.

 

He was director of the Laboratory of Pharmacology of the Faculty of Pharmacy of U.Porto between 1995 and 2005 and Director of this Faculty between 2002 and 2005. Within these functions, he emphasizes his involvement in the start up and development of the project for the new facilities of the Faculty of Pharmacy and the coordination of the processes of evaluation and credit of the course of Degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences, by the Portuguese Universities Foundation and by the Pharmacists Order, respectively.

 

Since 2005, he has been Vice-Dean of the U.Porto for Research, Innovation and Development. In the scope of these functions, he was responsible for the creation of UPTEC - U.Porto Science and Technology Park; and the design and implementation of the U.Porto Sea Pole and the Vairão Agrarian Campus. He was also one of the responsible for the creation of the program to promote the integration of undergraduate students in scientific research projects (IJUP) a unique program at European level. The promotion of entrepreneurship, interdisciplinarity (through the creation of several competency centers across the U.Porto around societal challenges or national priorities) and the strengthening of U. Porto to various economic sectors, in particular those related to the sea, the creative industries and culture, the agri-food industry and health and biotechnology, representing the U. Porto in representative bodies of associations representing these sectors.
